    Con anterioridad a la llegada de los Borbones a España la uniformidad militar no estaba reglamentada. Fue con la subida al trono del rey Felipe V cuando comenzó a reglamentarse. Felipe V trajo la moda francesa a la corte española, aunque esta ya se había ido introduciendo tímidamente en España durante el reinado de Carlos II, en los años finales del siglo xvii.

    El vestido francés, que consistía en justaucorps, veste y culotte, además de los cabos, fue sustituyendo a la sobria y negra indumentaria española. Los retratos analizados muestran la evolución que sufrió el uniforme militar a lo largo de los siglos xviii y xix. El retrato, fuente directa para conocer la moda y su evolución, se convirtió, asimismo, en el vehículo más idóneo para reflejar la imagen del poder, así como en un medio para dotar de perpetuidad a los personajes retratados, en este caso, algunos de los ilustres capitanes generales que ha tenido el ejército español.

    Prior to the arrival of the Bourbons to Spain, the military uniform was not regulated. This was with the accession of King Philip V when it started to get regulated. Felipe V brought French fashion to the Spanish court even though it had already been timidly introduced in Spain during the reign of Charles II, in the late seventeenth century. The French garment, which consisted in justaucorps, veste, culotte plus other accesories, replaced the sober black Spanish garment. The analyzed portraits show the evolution the military uniform suffered throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth century. The portrait, direct source to study the fashion and its evolution, also became the most suitable way to reflect the image of power and a means to provide perpetuity to the characters portrayed, in this case, some of the illustrious captains of The Spanish Army.
