General Manuel Fernández Silvestre was the Melilla’s chief between 1920 and 1921, the most important moment in the history of the Spanish protectorate at Morocco. Silvestre’s career was brilliant until the 22th of July, when he died in the retreat from Annual, which is considered by some authors as the biggest military defeat of the Spanish history. Through the years, due to the lack of exhaustive studies about this episode, some theories about the general’s personality have been taken as unquestionable, at the same time as they have painted a poor picture of him. In this article we will try to take a closer look at the general’s profile issue using original documents, coming mainly from his personal correspondence.
