After our previous reports (Coppini et al., 2006; Cuneo et al., 2006), which focused on the Gastropoda and Scaphopoda found in the muddy bottoms of the Livorno harbour and in the area off Antignano, South Livorno (North Thyrrhenian Sea), here we present a new contribution dealing with the Bivalvia. The aim of our systematic dredging activity, as in the previous papers, was to compare the mud-loving molluscs fauna of the Livorno area, sampled in potentially polluted environments (Livorno harbour), with that of more pristine ones (off Antignano). On the whole 71 living Bivalvia species have been collected and, within these, Corbula gibba (Olivi, 1792) is by far the most abundant species. On the whole, of these 71 species, twelve has to be considered uncommon, while five represent new records for the Tuscany Sea. The finding of Montacuta goudi van Aartsen, 1996 represents the first record for the Italian fauna, while the one of Mysella tumidula (Jeffreys, 1866) seems to be the first recent Italian Sea record. Each species has been illustrated and, when available, some ecological notes are reported.
