  • Objective: To evaluate the implementation of a Cardiovascular Risk (CVR) assessment program in Community Pharmacies (CP), in agreement with a Private Health Insurance (PHI).

Method: Six months pilot study, in agreement between a PHI and the Col·legi de Farmacèutics de Barcelona. Steps: design of the protocol of action for CVR assessment in the CP according to REGICOR, recruitment and training of the participating CP, development of a computer program for data collection, preparation of instructional material, information about the program and invitation to voluntary participate in it to the insured subjects by personal mail.

Results: Fifty CP got accredited for the pilot study. During the six month, 133 people [target population: 2,567 (5.18%)] asked for a CVR assessment. The 18.8% (25 subjects) showed no CVR factor, and were advised to re-evaluate the CVR annually; and for those with at least one CVR factor 108 subjects), 92.6% showed low (CVR <5) or moderate (CVR 5-9) risk and were derived to general practitioner for follow-up, while 7.4% showed high (CVR 10-14) or very high (CVR ≥15) risk, and were derived to CVR specialized Unit. The degree of satisfaction of both users and participating CP was very good.

Conclusions: CVR assessment, as a preventive measure in public health, can be performed satisfactory in CP. This first experience in Spain of collaboration agreement between a PHI and CP opens new ways of agreement for pharmaceutical care services provision in CP, not only with public or private health organizations, but also by direct payment from the user
