Resumen de Conversations with the dead: Quevedo and Statius, annotation and imitation

A 1502 Aldine Statius in the Princeton University Library contains the signature of the poet and satirist Francisco de Quevedo and a significant number of annotations in Quevedo's hand. The poetry of Statius seems to have occupied Quevedo's attention for over 35 years. Statius's Silvae are a logical source for Quevedo's own Silvas. The annotations in the Princeton volume enable one to see how thoroughly Quevedo's artistic vision in the silvas was inspired by Statius. Quevedo's conscious decision to draw on thematic and stylistic strands derived from the Latin poet gives his collection of poems coherence and encourages one to read the miscellany as an artfully crafted whole.
