Resumen de Who wrote the "Twelfth Oration" of Themistius?

Robert Goulding

  • The Twelfth Oration of the 4th-century rhetorician Themistius was published in 1605 in a Latin translation made by Hungarian humanist and renegade bishop Andreas Dudith. The oration, which is addressed to the Eastern emperor Valens, presents arguments for religious toleration. Serious doubts have been raised about the oration's authenticity, and Dudith is seen as a likely author of the work. Several new documents unambiguously connect the oration with Dudith and his intellectual concerns yet also raise difficult questions about the nature of Dudith's involvement in its translation (or composition) and distribution. The new documents may at least persuade scholars to take more seriously the possibility that the oration is genuine.
