In the context of socialist modernity and its transnational entanglements Otto Gotscheʼs village story Deep Furrows (1949) is read as attempt »to carry class struggle into the village« (Lenin) by means of literature. The guiding question concerns the agency of a literary author in a situation that is marked by occupation and dictatorship. Could the poet-functionary have been able, by writing his novel on land reform, to act on the course of the party?

Otto Gotsches Tiefe Furchen (1949), eine Dorfgeschichte der sozialistischen Moderne, wird im Zusammenhang von Translationsprozessen als ein Versuch gedeutet, mittels Literatur »den Klassenkampf ins Dorf hineinzutragen« (Lenin). Dabei stellt sich die Frage, welche Handlungsmacht einem literarischen Akteur unter den besonderen Bedingungen von Besatzung und Diktatur zukam. War es dem Dichter-Funktionär möglich, mit seinem Bodenreformroman auf den Kurs der Partei einzuwirken?
