Resumen de Crítica à cobertura midiática da Operação Lava Jato

In the last 2 years, the Brazilian mass media has been dedicating a lot of their journalistic agenda to cover the so-called “Lava Jato Operation” and its political repercussions. They draw special attention to certain parts of the investigation that has been conducted by the Federal Police, such as the plea bargaining agreements, and the decisions made by the judge at the 13th Federal Criminal Court in the city of Curitiba. This coverage sets the debate aflame in relation to the fine line that brings the media close to the criminal justice system, the relevance of criminalizing through the media in order to build the reality that shapes the collective imaginary and the reflection that this dynamics creates, namely the expectation of more stringent punishment for those under investigation as well as the defendants of the case. The aim of this article is to conduct a critical analysis of this media coverage by taking into account the power that the mass media has to turn the characters involved in the investigation into myths. We also analyzed a new form of penal populism manifestation, which was substantiated by the campaign promoted by the Public Prosecutor´s office whose focus is to legitimize the proposition of a bill, based on people’s initiative, called the 10 Measures Against Corruption.

Os meios de comunicação de massa no Brasil têm reservado amplo espaço de pauta nos últimos dois anos para a cobertura da chamada Operação Lava Jato e de suas repercussões políticas, dedicando especial atenção a determinados atos da investigação realizada pela Polícia Federal, como a celebração de acordos de colaboração premiada, além das decisões do juiz da 13.ª Vara Criminal da Justiça Federal em Curitiba. Trata-se de um episódio que reanima o debate sobre a delicada relação que aproxima a mídia do sistema penal, a relevância da criminalização midiática para a construção da realidade no imaginário coletivo, e os reflexos dessa dinâmica no acirramento das expectativas punitivas concentradas sobre os investigados e réus do caso. O objetivo do presente artigo consiste em proceder a uma análise crítica dessa cobertura midiática, levando em consideração o poder dos mass media de criar mitos representados pelos personagens processuais da operação, bem como delinear breves reflexões sobre uma nova forma de manifestação do populismo penal consubstanciada na campanha promovida pelo Ministério Público Federal com o propósito de legitimar a propositura de um projeto de lei de iniciativa popular tendo por conteúdo as 10 Medidas Contra a Corrupção.
