El artículo aborda las complejas relaciones entre guerra y liberalismo. Propone una definición de guerra liberal, estableciendo un vínculo inescindible entre el modo de gobierno y el modo de hacer la guerra. Postula que, para su despliegue, el gobierno liberal precisa de individuos libres, capaces de autogobernarse, subjetividad que, al no ser natural, debe construirse. De esta manera, el ejercicio del poder de muerte del liberalismo no está confinado únicamente a tareas negativas, sino que cumple una función positiva y productiva: construir subjetividades. Por lo tanto, las prácticas violentas o el ejercicio del derecho de muerte no desaparecen en el gobierno liberal, sino que se transforman. De este modo, las guerras liberales presentan características particulares, distintas a las que caracterizaban a las guerras predominantes durante el sistema westfaliano. Particularidades que se presentan en su objeto, en sus objetivos y en sus mecanismos, en el ámbito de la espacialidad en la que ésta se despliega, y en el de la determinación del enemigo.

The article deals with the complex relations between war and liberalism. It proposes a definition of liberal war through the establishment of an indivisible bond between the way of government and the way of war. It asserts that, to deploy itself, liberal government needs free individuals, capable of self-government. As that particular subjectivity is not natural, it has to be constructed. Thus, the exercise of liberalism´s power of death it is not confined solely to negative tasks. It fulfills a positive and productive function: the construction of subjectivities. This means that violent practices or the exercise of the right to death, do not disappear with liberal government. Instead, they transform themselves. In consequence, liberal wars present particular characteristics, different from those that used to characterize wars during the Westphalian system. These particularities appear in their objects, objectives and mechanisms, as well as in their specific spatiality and their enemy determination.
