This article reports on a study that says half of the land on earth is held afloat by heat inside the earth. Without the heat, that land would sink below sea level and even parts of the Rocky Mountains and the high Sierras in the U.S. would become just islands. Researchers also found that more heat does not necessarily result in higher elevation. The research is helping scientists model geologic processes. INSET: Stepping Up.
