This article reports on the failure of the scientific community to create a model of a cell's plasma membrane and the openings it has, known as ion channels. An experiment at the University of Oxford in England has made imitation cells from water droplets enveloped in a layer of fat that form bilayers into which membrane channels can be inserted. Called "liquid Lego," the droplets join with neighbors making the equivalent of a complete membrane.
