Resumen de Un vocabulaire medicalise pour une "ars uiuendi": dermatologie ou cosmetologie des femmes chez Pline l'Ancien

Jacqueline Vons

  • ln the 'Naturalis Historia' of Pliny the Elder, the presence of many cures solely prescribed for women skin cares shows the problematic limit between dermatology and cosmetology, between medicine and aesthetics. As regards three skin uitia (lentigo, ruga and testa), it's worth noting that the practices are various, resorting to cleaning agents for the changes in pigmentation on the face, and fat mollifying cosmetics to replace the deficiences of the hydrolipidic film. Beyond the medical results caused by the alternated use of such products, it's possible to discern, in the Encyclopaedia of Pliny the EIder, some criteria used by fashion and seduction, and also the views of a man, a writer, on contemporary feminin practices, which he is a witness of, while condemning this 'Ars uiuendi' based upon make believe, in the name of natural medicine and aesthetics.
