The writer discusses the provenance of two famous paintings by Correggio: the Education of Cupid in the National Gallery in London and the so-called Jupiter and Antiope in the Louvre in Paris. Despite the lack of certainty regarding the location of the two works, it has always been assumed that they were commissioned for the Gonzaga collection. However, the discovery of the 1589 inventory of Nicola Maffei listing the contents of his palace in Mantua, Italy, and including the names of the paintings by Correggio, suggests a different provenance for these works. There now seems no reason to doubt that the Correggios were acquired by Count Nicola Maffei no later than 1536 and were subsequently purchased by the Gonzaga.
