  • The article discusses the conservative Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's role in Turkey's politics from the 1980s through the mid 2010s, including his move towards authoritarianism following the failed July 2016 coup d'etat against him. An overview of Erdogan's relationship with Islamism and liberalism is provided. Erdogan's efforts to establish peace in the Turkish government's conflict with Kurds of Turkey are discussed.
