La conmemoración del Bicentenario de la independencia de Paraguay: un balance

    Como parte de la conmemoración del Bicentenario de la Independencia de Paraguay, cuyos actos centrales se desarrollaron en el año 2011, se establecieron oficialmente nuevos próceres de la patria, tuvieron lugar prolongados debates en torno a figuras ilustres de la política y de la cultura paraguaya, a fin de calibrar si eran merecedoras de ocupar un lugar en el Panteón Nacional de los Héroes, y se inauguraron importantes estructuras edilicias, entre otras iniciativas. Este artículo pretende examinar algunas de esas inclinaciones.

    Para ello se analizan los debates que motivaron los proyectos para la ampliación del Panteón Nacional y el principal argumento que sirvió de sostén: hacer visibles a quienes habían quedado excluidos, durante doscientos años, de la historia de la nación. Asimismo, se describen algunas de las principales celebraciones y se hace foco en los discursos sobre las visiones del pasado paraguayo que las rodearon.

    In Paraguay, in 2011, the year of the bicentenary of independence, there were officially established new founding fathers, and intense debates developed around these illustrious figures of Paraguayan culture in order to gauge whether they were worthy of a place in the National Pantheon of Heroes, and major building structures were opened, among other initiatives. This study aims to condense some of the inclinations of the bicentennial of independence in Paraguay. First discussions on projects for the expansion of the national pantheon and considerations on the main argument that served as support offered are analyzed: making visible those who had been excluded, for two hundred years, from the “history of the nation”. In addition, some of the main celebrations, their contents and discourses on visions of the Paraguayan past that surrounded them are discussed.
