  • Resumen
    • This article investiga tes British attitudes towards the Japanese education system as a possible model for reformmg Brltish education between 1868 and 1914.

In contrast to Britain, one of the most industrialized nations with modern and 'civilized' institutions, Japan was not only a late developer which had only commenced the process of modernization in the mid-nineteenth century, but it was also a non-Christian and non-white nation. However, British observers sometimes made surprisingly positive comments on Japan's newly introduced education system.
