La batalla de Hunayn fue sin duda una de las más importantes campañas militares del Profeta Muhammad. Sin embargo, es una de las que más interrogantes suscita, debido a la complejidad de las tradiciones que narran tanto los acontecimientos militares de la batalla, como el reparto del botín en Ji‘rana, después de la confrontación de Hunayn. Las tradiciones en las diferentes fuentes árabes contienen grandes contradicciones que hace imposible una reconstrucción fidedigna del enfrentamiento, del número de soldados en el ejército musulmán, del número de muertos, así como del botín capturado. Este último parece también exagerado. Este ensayo analiza estos distintos aspectos y profundiza en las contradicciones en la tradición musulmana y en las fuentes árabes, que suscitan tantas interrogantes en torno a esta batalla.

Undoubtedly the battle of Hunayn was Prophet Muhammad’s one of the major military campaigns. However, it is one of the wars which raises more questions. This is due to the complexity of the various Muslim traditions that describe both, the military confrontation itself, and the distribution of the booty at Ji‘rana, after the battle of Hunayn. Muslim traditions contained in the different Arabic sources have serious contradictions, which make impossible an accurate reconstruction of the war, the number of soldiers in the Muslim army, the number of deaths among the Muslims, as well as the number of prisoners, and the animals captured to the enemy. The figures that Arabic sources contain seem to be exaggerated. This essay analyses these themes, and tries to shed some light on the contradictions in Muslim traditions and in Arabic sources, which raise so many questions around this battle.
