  • The article discusses the efforts by banks around the world as of mid-September 2016 to clean up their non-performing loans (NPL) to improve their balance sheets. Also cited are the percentage of NPLs of banks in such countries as Italy, Cyprus, and Portugal, the purchase by investment firm Cerberus of the NPL portfolios of the banks Van Lanschot and UK Asset Resolution, and the effectiveness of securitisation as possible solution in cleaning up NPLs.
