The discussion on the effects of the opening of a new big store is always intense, however in most cases inconclusive. This work proposes a case study about the effects of the opening of new IKEA stores in Spanish cities during the period 2005-2012. The results indicate that negative real effects exist both on the number of small and medium-sized establishments and on the commercial surface of furniture stores. And they also anticipate a reduction in prices of furniture effect. Although such results are moderated by two important external effects, such as developments in income per capita and in the number of mortgages
