Dylantin-induced gingival enlargement has its origen in an excessive amount of fibroblast-derived collagen. This study has been undertaken to analyze the quantitative variation in the fibroblastic population and its dosagedependence during the first stages of hydantoin administration.
Fifteen adult Wistar-Cobs rats were used and they were calssified into three groups according to the dosage: control group, low dosage group (10 mg/day) and a high dosage group (30 mg/day). After receiving the drug for 5 weeks the rats were sacrificed and histologic gingival samples were obtained. Histometric evaluation was performed by counting the cells in ten randomly selected areas and a Fisher statistical analysis was carried out. The results show an early increase in the number of gingival fibroblast in the low dosage group (21,2% - p< 0,01-) as well as in the high dosage group (59,2% - p< 0,01-) with respect to the control group. A statistically significant association between the hydantoin dosage and the number of cells in both experimental groups was observed.
