A new National Curriculum, new criteria and a new grading system are being introduced in England for the GCSE examinations (normally taken at age 16). There has to be some way of telling teachers and students what will be examined and what grades will be awarded, and of relating the grades to what they mean. This article deals with these issues. It uses illustrations taken from the system in use up to 2015 but the principles are the same and can be used to reflect on the new system.
