  • Resumen
    • In the second half of the sixteenth century, the authors of Protestant martyrologies developed a ‘new’ view on martyrs. Their intention was to restrain from emphasizing ‘wrong’ martyrs and orthodox Christian views. Rather, they focused on the cause of the martyrdom, the truth testimonies of the martyrs, and stressed Christ as the single mediator between God and man. Almost simultaneously, preachers and schoolmasters began to write martyrs’ plays. In this paper I analyze whether the ‘new’ view on martyrs represented in martyrologies can also be found in martyrs’ plays. I also explore how martyrologies and plays relate to each other. The Tragedia / von Stephano dem heiligen marterer by Michael Sachs is the focus of my analysis. I conclude that hagiographies provide the argumentative background for this martyrs’ play. Furthermore, Sachs pursues or focuses on his own didactic goals. For this purpose, he integrates the figure of the fool in his plays, who criticizes Protestant Christians for being insufficiently pious.
