  • Resumen
    • Type 1 diabetes is characterized by the loss of function of endocrine beta cells, resulting in euglycemia maintenance deficiency. This condition greatly affects diabetic patients' quality of life and current therapies do not provide fine regulation of normoglycemia. In this project we propose a new model for a bioartificial pancreas that combines cell therapy and bioengineering to restore beta cell function. We propose the co-encapsulation of pancreatic endoderm, precursor for beta cells, and oral mucosa lamina propria progenitorcells, that will pro- vide anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory support. In addition, provascularization factors and immunossuppressive chemokines loaded in nanopart icles will aid capsule irrigation and immunoprotection. These composed microcapsules will be transplanted into the patient’s intra- peritoneal space and we will study how glycemia regulation changes upon grafting.
