    In April 1984, the writer Philippe Muray published a fat book entitled Le XIXe siècle à travers les âges, which had a strong impact. The idea was to sketch out the cultural archaeology of the contemporary world through the idea of “dixneuviémité” or “nineteenthcenturyness”, the word designating both the spirit of the 19th century and a tendency of the spirit that the 19th century might have helped give form to as well as pride of place in our culture. At the heart of this “nineteenthcenturyness” was, according to the author, an “oculto-socialism”, or “ocsoc” for short, a mixture of political progressivism and heterodox religiosity of which Victor Hugo is the ultimate type. The thesis, which was polemical, is illustrated through a survey of 19th century literature, great and small, fictional and ideological, seen through the prism of the quantity of “nineteenthcenturyness” exhibited by its protagonists. The book has become paradoxically a classic of 19th century historiography and continues to divide the critical opinion of scholars of the period. The book’s literary dimension is evident, but Muray does develop within it a type of historiography that has proven creative in its capacity to conceive the century in a new way, to invent new objects of research and to further theses that are still thought-provoking

    En avril 1984, l’écrivain Philippe Muray publiait un gros livre intitulé Le XIXe siècle à travers les âges qui fit forte impression. Il se présentait comme un projet d’archéologie culturelle du monde contemporain fondé sur l’idée de « dixneuviémité », celle-ci désignant à la fois l’esprit du XIXe siècle et une tendance de l’esprit humain auquel le XIXe siècle historique aurait donné forme et place dans la culture. Au coeur de cette « dixneuviémité » se trouvait selon l’auteur l’« occulto-socialisme » – l’« ocsoc » en abrégé –, un mélange de progressisme politique et de religiosité hétérodoxe dont Hugo incarnait le type le plus achevé. La thèse, volontairement polémique, est illustrée par tout un voyage dans la littérature du siècle, grande et petite, d’imagination et de doctrine, au cours duquel Muray évalue la part variable de « dixneuviémité » de ses différents protagonistes. L’ouvrage est devenu un classique paradoxal de l’historiographie du XIXe siècle qui continue de susciter chez les spécialistes des réactions très contrastées. Si sa dimension littéraire est évidente, Muray y déploie bel et bien un certain type d’opération historiographique qui a prouvé sa fécondité par sa capacité à proposer une vision singulière du siècle, à inventer de nouveaux objets et par certaines de ses thèses qui, aujourd’hui encore, sont susceptibles de faire réfléchir
