    The reorganisation of the Louvre’s collections after the 1848 revolution reflects a general appropriation by artists and critics of the socialist and republican theories of the July Monarchy. What is to be done with the art of the past in a society that wants to promote social art ? This question, which lingers in the background between 1830 and 1848, cannot do without a reflection regarding museums as institutions and shows the political and philosophical dimensions of any specific museum hanging. Two democratic Republicans thought through the political dimensions of hangings according to schools of painting : Philippe-Auguste Jeanron, director of the National museums from the 28th of February 1848 to the 25th of December 1849, and his comrade in Republicanism, Théophie Thoré, an important journalist and critic during the July Monarchy

    La réorganisation des collections du musée du Louvre immédiatement après la révolution de 1848 participe d’un mouvement général d’appropriation par la critique et les artistes des théories socialistes et républicaines de la monarchie de Juillet. Que faire de l’art du passé dans une société qui prône un art social ? Cette question, lancinante entre 1830 et 1848, ne peut se passer d’une réflexion sur l’institution muséale et montre la dimension à la fois politique et philosophique d’un accrochage de musée. Deux figures de républicains démocrates ont pensé l’accrochage par écoles dans toute sa dimension politique : Philippe-Auguste Jeanron, directeur des Musées nationaux du 28 février 1848 au 25 décembre 1849, et son camarade républicain Théophile Thoré, journaliste et critique influent de la monarchie de Juillet
