    La conversión al cristianismo del emperador Constantino en el siglo IV marcó el inicio de las peregrinaciones. Relacionado con las peregrinaciones tuvo lugar el interés y la valoración de las reliquias, debido, entre otras cosas, a las conclusiones del Concilio de Nicea celebrado en el año 787, en el que se acordó que para consagrar un altar era necesario guardar en él alguna reliquia. Desde antiguo ha habido peregrinaciones para venerar el Lignum Crucis custodiado en el monasterio de Santo Toribio en Liébana. Tras la decaída de las peregrinaciones en el siglo XIX, actualmente el Gobierno de Cantabria  ha convertido la reliquia en un reclamo turístico para atraer visitantes no sólo al monasterio sino a toda la Comunidad.

    The beginning of Christian pilgrimages dates from the conversion of Emperor Constantine to Christianity in the fourth century. Related pilgrimages held the interest and appreciation of relics, due to the conclusions of the Council of Nicea in 787, in which it was agreed that to consecrate an altar it was necessary to keep at it some relic. Since ancient times there have been pilgrimages to venerate the Lignum Crucis kept in the monastery of Santo Toribio in Liébana. After the decay of pilgrimages in the nineteenth century, nowadays the Government of Cantabria has become the relic into a tourist attraction to attract visitors not only to the monastery but to the entire community.
