Ceramic known as "Avon": historiographical return and updating of a legendary attribution.
The attribution to the Avon workshop of a large group of French 17th century glazed pottery is now challenged by historiographical research.
In the beginning of the 19th century, the basins with a dècor of rustic figurine, the openwork plates and baskets decorated with ornamental figures, as well as statuettes in glazed pottery were collected as being the works of Bernard Palissy, famous potter of the 16th century. The written works left by him were republished as a whole in 1777, which provoked his rediscovery by collectors of Renaissance "objets d'art" at the beginning of the 19th century. When it became evident that Bernard Palissy could not have created all these piece, an important part was then attibuted to a workshop located near the Chateau of Fontainebleau: the Avon workshop. If it is possible today to separate the works of Bernard Palissy from those of his 17th century followers, it is on the other hand impossible to affirm, after the careful examination of the written sources still extant that the so called Avon workshop is indeed at the origin of most of the pieces that are associated with it. Since the discovery of a source of production of these ceramics in Normandy, the legendary Avon workshop must necessarily be challenged.
