  • The other perspective: color and the representation of space in the late Middle Ages.

    Since Erwin Panofsky in 1925, the Italian "perspectiva legitima" as a symbolical form in Renaissance painting has attracted much attention among art historians. As yet unexplored is another perspective which appeared in Northern Painting at about the same time. This "atmospheric perspective", based on completely different principles, mainly color, also made a revolution in the construction of the pictorial space and was a departure from millenary practices. My aim here will be to further explore its origins, reception and consequences in comparison with its Italian counterpart at the beinning of the 15th century.
