  • Resumen
    • Rishad Bathiudeen, Sri Lanka's minister for trade and commerce, was quoted as telling China's envoy to Colombo, Wu Jianghao, during a visit to the island in March that "Sri Lanka wants to upgrade its mineral sector", and that it was looking to Asia's biggest economy to back its development initiatives.

"There is considerable scope for partnership for Chinese firms in this sector here. Lankan-produced graphite, crystals and ilmenite are of international standards," Bathiudeen said. The South-Asian nation is home to large deposits of industrial minerals, including mineral sands such as ilmenite, a unique type of graphite known as'vein graphite', phosphate, quartz and mica.

"China welcomes more export product diversity from Sri Lanka," ambassador Wu said, adding that China was seeking "a more pragmatic trade relationship with Sri Lanka".
