Resumen de Global logistics: redevelopments, relocations and revivals

Bruce McMichael

  • Kinder Morgan Terminal's new soda ash export facility at the port's Terminal 4 will boost efficiency and sets the stage for growth, says port marketing executive Josh Thomas. Construction work is now underway, and is expected to be completed in September this year.

The high-grade product arrives in Portland loaded on rail trains of over 100 cars in length, where it is then stored in a covered structure until it is loaded onto bulk cargo ships via a ship loader conveyor system. "That ship loader portion of the conveyor system is being replaced by a state-of-the-art, high capacity loader that will increase productivity and overall efficiency," Thomas added.

Southern Africa's mining sector is asking for more efficient railway and port logistics systems, and is hoping Transnet's intention to upgrade existing railway lines, as well as to build new railway lines, and upgrade ports will bring economic benefits. Funds for this development will come in part through a March 2013 agreement between Transnet and the China Development Bank (CDC).
