  • The article reflects on the decision of Egyptian President Anwar Sadat to remove government subsidies on a host of food commodities that included cooking oil, flour, and rice in January 1977. It mentions that the removal of the subsidy program caused food prices to spike to levels that most Egyptians could never afford. It notes the reinstatement of the program wherein prices returned to normal.
