A raíz de la condena del heliocentrismo y el caso Galileo: el mito del atraso científico español al comienzo de la Revolución Científica

    En el marco de la conmemoración del 400 aniversario del caso Galileo y la condena del heliocentrismo, hacemos una revisión de los conocimientos y contribuciones de España al inicio de la Revolución Científica en dos disciplinas clave como la Astronomía y la Mecánica. Mostramos el conocimiento que sobre las ideas astronómicas copernicanas se tenía en las Universidades y en instituciones vinculadas al Descubrimiento de América. Asimismo, analizamos la contribución de Domingo de Soto a la Mecánica Moderna. Se comprueba que España, al contrario de lo que suele creerse, estaba al día de los conocimientos que en Europa había sobre Astronomía e hizo contribuciones importantes en la Cinemática, estando por tanto a un nivel avanzado en comparación con los demás países de Europa. Se hace una reflexión sobre el atraso científico en España conforme avanza el siglo XVII analizando las diferentes razones que pueden explicar dicho retraso

    Within the framework of the commemoration of the 400th anniversary of the sentencing of Heliocentrism and the case of Galileo, we review the knowledge and contributions made by Spain at the beginning of the Scientific Revolution in two key disciplines, Astronomy and Mechanics. We investigate the knowledge held by universities and institutions linked to the discovery of America regarding Copernican astronomical ideas. Also, we analyse the advances made by Domingo de Soto in modern Mechanics. It is demonstrated that Spain, as opposed to what is generally believed, was aware of the knowledge in Europe on Astronomy and made major contributions to Kinematics, being therefore at an advanced level in comparison with the other countries of Europe. A reflection is offered on the scientific lag that developed in Spain as the 17th century progressed, analysing the different reasons that might explain this falling behind.
