Departing from the treatment of the subject of luxury in Cadalso’s "Cartas Marruecas", we examine the consequences of the debate about luxury and the radical shift of focus –suggested by Cadalso– that the eighteenth-century thinkers (Mandeville, Voltaire...) effected, especially from Montesquieu and his doux commerce doctrine onwards. This shift is reflected in the adoption of radically different attitudes, either in mere social satires or in the moral condemnations of luxury, the latter rooted in the Stoic or Christian traditions.
