La modernidad revisada en los textos de Venturi y Scott Brown

    Aprendiendo de Las Vegas, 1972, de Robert Venturi, Denise Scott Brown y Steven Izenour, fue entendido por la crítica como continuidad de Complejidad y Contradicción en Arquitectura, 1966. El trabajo sobre Las Vegas reafirma la posición crítica de Venturi con la arquitectura moderna, pero supone al mismo tiempo un acercamiento en lo estratégico y en lo metodológico a los ideales modernos de objetividad, inexpresividad y funcionalismo anteriormente combatidos. El artículo profundiza en dicha evolución, tratando de esclarecer la influencia de Scott Brown e indirectamente del Independent Group y los Smithson en el pensamiento de Venturi. El análisis comparado de los dos libros constituye buena prueba del cambio experimentado por Venturi en el ámbito teórico, pasando de la reacción contra la modernidad a un intento de su redefinición.

    Learning from Las Vegas, 1972, by Robert Venturi, Denise Scott Brown y Steven Izenour, was interpreted by the critics as a continuation of Complexity and Contradiction in Architecture, 1966. The study developed on Las Vegas confirms Venturi´s critical opposition to modern architecture, but at the same time it entails an acceptance of some of the modern ideals – objectivity, inexpressiveness and functionalism – which were decisively fought before. This essay go in depth this evolution, trying to clarify the influence of Scott Brown and indirectly the Independent Group and Alison and Peter Smithson in Robert Venturi’s thinking. The comparative analysis of both books establish good evidence of the change experimented by Venturi in the theoretical field, moving from a reaction to modern architecture, to an attempt of its redefinition.
