  • Resumen
    • Tomaso Buzzi's work on villa Necchi Campiglio, 1938-1957.

The paper looks at the role played from 1938 by Tomaso Buzzi in the alterations to the rooms and exteriors of the Villa Necchi Campiglio in Milan.

The central city residence (which can now be visited thanks to its having been donated to FAI-Fondo Ambiente Italiano by the Necchi sisters in 2001) had been designed between 1932 and 1935 by the architect Piero Portaluppi for the trio of clients consisting of Nedda Necchi, his sister Gigina and the latter's husband, Angelo Campiglio. Typical members of the rich, entrepreneurial Lombard middle class, the Necchi Campiglio were known for their historic production of sewing machines and the activity of a big foundry in Pavia.

Thanks also to the documentation provided by the Tomaso Buzzi archive in Scarzuola, it has been possible to reconstruct the relationship that bound the architect to his Milan clients for about twenty years (from 1938 to the end of the 1950s) and who gradually completed or altered Portaluppi's original layout. From a historical point of view, the study of Buzzi's move to Villa Necchi Campiglio can help clarify the decorative tastes during the postwar period, particualrly concerning private interiors. Indeed, these rooms seemed at the time to be subject to a fascination with the past and in particular the forms of the eihgteenth century. Buzzi himself proposed an original interpretation of this in the Milan villa, with this work offering what seems to be a comprehensive response to the need for identification and self-representation of an entire social class.
