Resumen de ¿Santidad o carisma?: Teresa de Ávila en la escritura femenina anglófona

La mujer que fue Teresa de Ávila, su contribución literaria y el mito en que se convirtió después han dejado una profunda huella no sólo en la cultura española, sino también más allá de nuestras fronteras. En este sentido, su influjo ha sido particularmente notable en la tradición anglófona, como se puede observar en la gran diversidad de textos literarios escritos desde el siglo XVII hasta la actualidad en los que la santa aparece como una importante presencia intertextual, si no como eje mismo de la obra. El propósito de este artículo es examinar los textos más relevantes dentro de esta tendencia, con especial atención a aquellos escritos en el último siglo, con el fin de evaluar hasta qué punto y en qué aspectos la santa de Ávila ha sido y es aún fuente de inspiración literaria en los países de habla inglesa.

The woman Teresa of Avila was, her literary contribution and the myth she later became have left an indelible imprint not only on Spanish culture, but also abroad. In this respect, her influence has been particularly prominent in the Anglophone tradition, as can be observed in the wide range of literary texts written from the 17th century onwards in which the saint appears as an important intertextual presence, if not as the focus of the work. This essay attempts to examine the most relevant texts produced within this trend, with special attention to those written in the last century, with the aim of assessing to what extent and in which aspects Teresa of Avila has been and still is a source of inspiration for writers in English-speaking countries.
