    Teresa de Jesús, la mística «andariega» que se consideraba «iletrada», nos ha dejado una de las páginas más bellas de la literatura mística española de todos los tiempos. Leer a Teresa de Jesús es adentrarnos en la profundidad de su experiencia de Dios. Aunque ella se considera incapaz por ser «mujer y ruin», muestra en sus escritos una fecunda capacidad imaginativa creadora. La originalidad de su estilo no radica tanto en la originalidad de sus imágenes, recibidas en su mayoría de la Biblia y de la tradición, sino en su habilidad para flexibilizarlas y reconducirlas a su objetivo final, «dar a entender» las misericordias de Dios. La luz y el agua, el vino y la bodega, el castillo y la puerta, el fuego y la llama son imágenes que se entrecruzan en los escritos teresianos, una y otra vez, en un crescendo imparable, para declarar la fuerza de esa experiencia mística que la desborda. Pero sobre todo, es el «centro» del alma, el «hondón interior» donde se produce la unión transformante del alma con Dios, la imagen que mejor expresa la experiencia más profundamente vivida por Teresa. Es de todas sus experiencias místicas la realidad que constituye la clave y el fundamento de su espiritualidad.

    Teresa of Jesus, the «restless» mystic who considered herself «illiterate», has left us one of the most beautiful works of Spanish mystical literature of all times. Although she considered herself incapable, for being both «contemptible and a woman», in her writings she shows a fruitful creative imagination. The originality of her style lies not so much in the originality of its images, the majority taken from the Bible and from tradition, but in her ability to make them more flexible and redirect them to her ultimate objective, «to help us to understand» the mercies of God. Light and water, wine and the winery, the castle and the door, fire and flame are images that intertwine through Teresa’s writings time and time again, in an unstoppable crescendo, to declare the strength of that mystical experience that overwhelms her. But the image that best expresses the experience most deeply felt by Teresa is above all the «centre» of the soul, the «hondón interior» where the transforming union of the soul with God takes place.
