  • Resumen
    • The genetic structure of the Canary Islands blue tits Cyanistes teneriffae has been extensively studied since the beginning of the 21st century. However, the evolutionary history of this complex group has been difficult to resolve due to the limited number of molecular markers and populations studied. With the present article I will show how we have increased the knowledge on this group step by step, and how only after the recent use of high genomic coverage and broad taxon sampling we have disentangled the evolutionary history of the Afrocanarian blue tits. I will show that Afrocanarian blue tits are monophyletic and represent four clades, also that the Canarian blue tits show a continental origin, and that the Canary Islands were colonised three times (the first time after the Messinian salinity crisis, around four millions of years, and the last one around 275,000 years). Importantly, the Canary Islands hold sink populations and they have not served as source for back colonisation of the continental blue tits.
