    As the Habitat III international conference to be held at Quito in October 2016 is in preparation (following the conferences of Vancouver in 1976 and Istanbul in 1996, it will lay down the United Nations road map for urban development over the next twenty years), one thing is clear: solutions for the city of tomorrow are no longer to be sought solely from among the developed countries, but increasingly from the cities of the South. Those cities, with populations that are increasing rapidly and should continue to do so in the coming decades, are offering a new approach to urbanism: namely prototype urbanism, an approach that is less theoretical and more experimental. Morgan Poulizac outlines its mechanisms for us here (responding –often urgently– to the social de mand with the means that happen to be to hand) and provides various examples from the African, Asian and South American continents.

    Tandis que se prépare la conférence internationale Habitat III qui se tiendra à Quito en octobre 2016 et qui, après celles de Vancouver en 1976 et Istanbul en 1996, établira la feuille de route des Nations unies pour le développement urbain des 20 prochaines années, un constat s’impose : les solutions pour la ville de demain ne sont plus à rechercher uniquement du côté des pays développés, mais de plus en plus du côté des villes du Sud. Celles-ci — dont la population est en forte augmentation et devrait continuer à croître dans les prochaines décennies — proposent une nouvelle approche de l’urbanisme, moins théorisée et plus expérimentale : l’urbanisme prototypal. Morgan Poulizac nous en présente ici les ressorts (répondre, souvent dans l’urgence, avec les moyens du bord, à la demande sociale), assortis de divers exemples issus des continents africain, asiatique et sud-américain.
