    The “Phosphore” project, rolled out by the construction conglomerate Eiffage, provides a good example of the principle of broadening the range of actors involved in urban innovation. Without claiming to offer a blueprint for society, Phosphore nonetheless goes far beyond the ordinary industrial or urban project. It verges on a utopian approach both in its incorporation of the main themes of contemporary utopias –the limit on resources, personal fulfilment, sharing and mobility– and its methods of horizontal management.

    Valérie David has been running this experimental project since 2007. Here she affords unprecedented insight into the workings of utopian thought in a major construction company.

    L’exemple du projet Phosphore, déployé par le groupe de bâtiment-travaux publics (BTP) Eiffage, illustre bien le principe d’une ouverture du jeu d’acteurs dans la production d’innovations urbaines. Sans prétendre proposer un projet de société, la démarche Phosphore va cependant bien au-delà du projet industriel ou du projet urbain. Elle s’approche d’une démarche utopique à la fois par la prise en compte des principaux thèmes des utopies contemporaines — la limite des ressources, l’épanouissement personnel, le partage, la mobilité — et par la méthode de management horizontal utilisée. Valérie David conduit cette démarche laboratoire depuis 2007. Elle apporte un éclairage inédit sur les cheminements de la pensée utopique dans une grande entreprise de BTP.
