In the Middle Ages, most denizens in German towns were burghers, but also other groups sucb as Jews, denizens witbout citizensbip or Beisassen (residents without full rigbts of citizenship). The Beisassen ofFrankfurt were neither artisans nor poor people. Some depended on other lords or other towns, mostly the county of Hanau, which impeded them to become burghers of Frankfurt; others didn't want to.
