    Entre aquellas novelas que tienen como trasfondo el problema histórico que a los chilenos nos plantean la dictadura y la postdictadura, "El desierto", la novela de Carlos Franz de 2005, podría ser la más extensa y compleja. Cruza Franz en ella dos historias, cada una de ellas conteniendo su percepción del período del caso. El 'tertium comparationis' se lo proporciona el ejercicio de la justicia: violación lagrante y adecuación acomodaticia en la dictadura; manipulación mañosa y, de nuevo, adecuación acomodaticia en la postdictadura. Subyace al paralelismo la asociación (¿dependencia?) de la justicia con el poder. El empleo de la idea nietzscheana de la tragedia griega refuerza y da su forma artística a esta perspectiva.

    Among those novels that have as their background the historical problem Chileans face regarding the dictatorship and post-dictatorship, "El desierto", Carlos Franz’s 2005 novel, could be the most extensive and complex. In it Franz intertwines two stories, each one containing his perception of the two corresponding periods.The enforcement of justice provides him with the tertium comparationis: lagrant violations and accommodating adaptations during the dictatorship; crafty manipulations and, once more, accommodating adaptations during the post-dictatorship. Beneath this paralelism lies the connection (subordination?) of justice to power. The use of Nietzsche’s idea regarding Greek tragedy reinforces and gives this perspective its artistic form.
