    En este artículo se analiza el primer censo general de cofradíasmedievales de España con 436 identificadas durante losaños 1122-1521, la mitad de ellas ubicadas en Sevilla, Zaragozay Valencia. En su mayoría son de los siglos XIV y XV y seconocen sus advocaciones, con un claro predominio de lascofradías de oficios. El estudio establece una interpretacióngeneral del movimiento confraternal hispano en perspectivaeconómica y política más allá de los aspectos religiosos yasistenciales.

    This paper presents an analysis of the first general census ofthe medieval confraternities in Spain. Four hundred and thirtysixconfraternities are identified between the years 1122-1521;half of them are located in Seville, Zaragoza, and Valencia andthe majority of these are from the 14th and 15th centuries. Thisanalysis shows both their venerations along with the clearpredominance of trade associations. This study establishesa general interpretation for the confraternal, Hispanic movementusing economic and political parameters more than thereligious and welfare aspects.
