    El presente artículo se centra tanto en la cuestión de las ceremonias sínicas llevadas a cabo en honor de los antepasados de la familia como en el papel desarrollado por Carlos Horatii de Castorano en Roma en los años de Matteo Ricci, la Compañía de Jesús había sostenido el carácter no religioso de las ceremonias del confucianismo, interpretación que no era compartida por la totalidad de las órdenes religiosas y que Roma, por su parte, intentaba continuamente volver a llevarlas a la uniformidad en su práctica. De este modo, podemos leer las intervenciones de los cardenales y de los miembros de la Congregación de la Inquisición, reunidos a partir del 24 de agosto de 1741 para discutir y elaborar la condena papal de los ritos. Las sutiles discusiones sobre la forma y la materia de las tablas de los antepasados y sobre las específicas circunstancias de las ceremonias en honor de los difuntos (sobre los cuales Castorano contribuyó de manera importante) dejaban aflorar las exigencias de uniformar la práctica.

    The article focuses on the Chinese rites perdormed to honour the familiar's ancestors and on the role played, in Rome,by Carlo Horatii da Castorano in the years immediately preceding the condemnation of the Chinese rites (1742). From Matteo Ricci onwards, the Society of Jesus maintained that the Confucian ceremonies had no religious nature, but all religious orders did not share this interpretation, and the Roman Curia continuously attempted to bring uniformity to missionary practice. It is in this perspetive that we can read the record left by the cardinals and members of the Congregation of the Inquisition who started meeting on August 24th 1741 to discuss the matter and, in the event, to work out the papal condemnation of the Chinese rites. The need to standardize the practice stands out among subtle discussions on the form and matter of the tablets dedicated to the ancestors and on the specific phases of the ceremonies for the departed (on which Castorano gave an important contribution).
