    En la inauguración del año académico de 1914, Víctor Andrés Belaúnde (1883-1966) pronuncia, en los viejos claustros de la Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos, su celebérrimo discurso titulado "La crisis presente" teniendo como oyentes a la flor y nata de la Academia peruana así como a las más altas autoridades del Perú de la época, incluido el mismísimo Señor Presidente de la República. Sin duda el Perú vivía, en esos momentos, horas aciagas producto de la inestabilidad política y fiscal. Y es precisamente ello lo que motivó a Belaúnde a llamar la atención de las élites intelectuales y políticas, en el cronológicamente lejano pero esencialmente cercano año de 1914. El artìculo indaga cómo conceptúa Belaúnde la realidad peruana de la época, cuáles considera han sido las causas que han llevado a la crisis a la que se refiere y qué medidas deberían de tomarse para salir del problema e ir por la senda del progreso social. Es justamente este contraste entre lo que él considera es la realidad de la época y lo que debería ser, lo que nos permitirá distinguir entre la realidad y la idealidad que se va configurando en su discurso.

    At the opening of the academic year of 1914, Victor Andres Belaunde (1883-1966) pronounced in the old cloisters of the National University of San Marcos, his most celebrated speech entitled "The current crisis," having as audience the elite of Peruvian Academy as well as the highest authorities of Peru at the time, including the President of the Republic himself. No doubt that Peru lived in those times fateful hour product of political and fiscal instability. And this is precisely what motivated Belaunde to draw the attention of the intellectual and political elites in the distant chronologically but essentially close year of 1914. The article investigates how Belaunde conceptualizes Peruvian reality of the time, which he considers had been the causes which had led them to the crisis to which he referred and what measures should have been taken to be out of the problem and go on the path of social progress. It is precisely this contrast between what he believes is the reality of the times and what it should be, which will allow us to distinguish between reality and ideality which is taking shape in his speech.
