    El objetivo del trabajo es, primero, analizar y definir el significado al que se refieren los signos de manos y pies, pero también de otras partes del cuerpo humano (tales como ojos, cráneos, huesos, corazones, etc.) cuando aparecen en conjuntos en representaciones gráficas en manuscritos pictográficos o en formas líticas de los nahuas. El otro propósito es demostrar la importancia del contexto en el sistema nahua de la transmisión de información en forma gráfica, el cual puede determinar –y de hecho lo hace– el significado de los signos aplicados en dicho sistema. De tal forma, el significado de los conjuntos de distintas partes del cuerpo humano es diferente al significado de los signos de manos “plasmadas” en la cara de algunas deidades y de los signos de los pies de color negro colocados en hilera, así como difiere del simbolismo de los rituales del desmembramiento humano.

    Firstly the purpose of this paper is to analyze and define the meaning of the signs of hands and feet, but also of other parts of the human body (such as eyes, skull, bones, heart and others) when they appear together in a group in graphic representations either in the pictorial manuscripts or in lithic forms of the Nahua. Secondly the paper is to show and prove the importance of the context in the Nahua system of graphic communication. The context may determine –and it does determine– the meaning of the signs applied in this system. Consequently the meaning of the groups of parts of human body is diff erent of the meaning of the signs of hands placed on the face of some deities, and of the meaning of the signs of black feet put in line, and it is also different of the symbolism of the ritual of human dismemberment.
