    El proceso de participación ciudadana en la elección de sus representantes inicia en América Central con las Cortes de Cádiz y la promulgación de la Constitución de 1812. El camino ha sido arduo en todos los países de la región, cada uno con sus particularidades, pero todos con avances y retrocesos muy parecidos. El repaso histórico del fortalecimiento de la democracia en América Central es el eje central del presente artículo que inicia precisamente con la convocatoria para la elección de representantes ante las Cortes de Cádiz hasta las reformas electorales actuales dadas por la vía de la jurisdicción constitucional, que han permito el fortalecimiento de las instituciones y la modernización de los marcos jurídicos electorales. Lo cierto es que en la actualidad la región tiene una ciudadanía más educada, mejor alimentada y con expectativas mayores; está atenta y participa de los grandes eventos políticos y electorales

    The process of citizen participation in the election of its representatives started in Latin America with the Courts of Cadiz and the enactment of the 1812 Constitution. The road has been difficult in all the countries of the region, every country with its own particular situations, but all of them with very similar breakthroughs and setbacks. The historical review of the strengthening of democracy in Central America is the key issue of this article. It begins with the call for election of representatives before the Courts of Cadiz up to the current electoral reforms given via constitutional jurisdiction, which have allowed the strengthening of the institutions and the modernization of electoral judicial frameworks. The truth is that nowadays, the region has a more educated citizenry who is better fed and who has higher expectations and who is also alert and willing to participate in the big political and electoral events
