    In Westen von Sahara gehört das weite Land Mauritanien jenen Wüsten und Randwüstengebieten deren Einwohnernoch eng von nomadichen oder sesshaften lebensweisen abhängen, und regelmässigvon der Dürre bedroht werden.

    Das moderne Gebiet beschränkt sich zur Zeit auf der Eisenförderung und wenigermassen auf dem Fischfang. Doch scheint es, dass im Laufe der letzten zwanzig vergangenen Jahren der Fluss Senegal und der atlantische Ozean die Lebenszentren und die Bevölkerung stark nach Westen anziehen. Nach interessantem Experimentiren versuchen bedeutende Pläne das Flussufer auf der Seite Mauritaniens und die früher vopn den Einwohnern unbeachtete atlantische Küste zu bewerten

    West of the Sahara, the extensive territory of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania is a tract of country pertaining partly to the Sahara, partly to the Sahel desert. Its inhabitants still depend largely on nomadic or sedentary ways of the life in a country that is periodically threatened with drought.

    The modern resources of Mauritania are for the time being, limited to the wirking of iron-lodes and in a lesser degree, to fishing. Yet it seems that for the last twenty years or so the vital urban centres and the population have been strongly attracted westward by the River Senegal and the Atlantic Ocean. Some important plans originating in worthwhile experiments have led the authorities to develop land along the Mauritanian bank of the River Seneal, also along the Atlantic coast whose economic importance the inhabitants of Mauritania were unaware of.

    A l'Ouest du Sahara, la vaste Mauritanie est l'un des pays sahélo-désertiques dont les habitants, encore largement tributaires de genres de vie nomades ou sédentaires, sont endémiquement mancés para la sécheresse.

    Les ressources modernes se limitent, pour l'instant, à l'explitation de gisements de fer et, à un moindre degré, de la pêche. Depuis une vingtaine d'années cepedant, il semble que le fleuve Sénégal et l'Océan Atlantique attirent fortement vers l'Ouest les centres vitaux et la population du pays. D'importants projects, amorcés par d'intéressantes expérimentations, tendentà valoriser la rive mauritanienne du fleuve et la cóte atlantique (autrefois ignorée des habitants).
