    El pinchbeck es una aleación de cobre y zinc que se asemeja mucho al oro y que alcanzó gran difusión durante el siglo xviii y principios del siglo xix. Su inventor, el reputado fabricante de relojes astronómicos y musicales londinense Christopher Pinchbeck (1670-1732), dio con la fórmula cuando experimentaba con distintas aleaciones en busca de un sustituto económico y maleable para el oro. Inicialmente lo utilizó en la producción de relojes y cadenas de reloj pero pronto extendió su uso a las joyas, bisutería y a otros pequeños artículos. El objetivo de esta ponencia es poner en valor el pinchbeck como alternativa respetable y legítima al oro, con el que se realizaron joyas y objetos representativos de un estilo y época específicos. Se tratarán aspectos como las características relevantes, tipos de joyas y artículos que se realizaron, contexto histórico y comercialización, su papel en la democratización de la joya y la situación del coleccionismo actual.

    Pinchbeck is an alloy of copper and zinc that closely resembles gold and which achieved widespread use during the eighteenth and beginning of the nineteenth century. Its inventor, Christopher Pinchbeck (c. 1670-1732), a London clockmaker renowned for his astronomical and musical clocks, came up with the formula while experimenting with different alloys looking for an affordable and malleable substitute for gold. Initially he used the alloy to produce watches and watch chains but soon extended its use to jewellery and other small items. The objective of this paper is to arouse interest in pinchbeck and reassess its value as a respectable and legitimate alternative to gold, with which objects and jewellery representing a specific time and style were made. Aspects such as its relevant characteristics, the types of items that were made, its historical context and commercialisation, its role in the democratization of jewellery and current trends in pinchbeck collecting are discussed.
