    A pesar del avance en el campo del dolor, el tratamiento del dolor neuropático no tiene solución. Los tratamientos disponibles solo mejoran al 30% de los pacientes. Los modelos animales de dolor neuropático pueden contribuir al desarrollo de nuevos fármacos. En la actualidad, existen dos tipos de modelos animales: los que producen daño en los nervios periféricos y los que dañan el sistema nervioso central (SNC). El concepto de dolor neuropático engloba numerosas situaciones clínicas; por ello, es imposible encontrar un modelo que represente, como ejemplo, a todos los modelos neuropáticos. A pesar de estas limitaciones, los modelos animales pueden mejorar el conocimiento del dolor neuropático y muchos de ellos pueden ser útiles para probar la eficacia analgésica de nuevos fármacos.

    Despite advances in pain research, the therapy of neuropathic pain still has no solution Available treatments only improve about 30% of patients. Animal models may contribute to the knowledge of its pathophysiology, as well as to the development of new treatments.

    There are two types of animal models of neuropathic pain: those that cause a lesion in the peripheral nerves and those that injure the central nervous system. The concept of neuropathic pain includes many clinical situations. Thus, it will be impossible to find a model that represents an example for all neuropathic pain. Notwithstanding these limitations, these animal models may help to improve the knowledge of neuropathic pain and some of them are useful for testing the analgesic efficacy of new drugs.
